Planning a wedding is exciting but can also be stressful, especially when creating the perfect timeline. With Chester’s stunning venues and lively atmosphere, it’s the ideal backdrop for your big day. This guide outlines a thoughtful timeline to help you enjoy a relaxed and memorable celebration filled with love and laughter.
Getting Started: Tiptoe Into the Day
The excitement begins on the morning of your wedding. It's essential to keep a relaxed vibe, even if nerves kick in. Aim to wake up around 7 AM to give yourself plenty of time.
Some couples prefer an intimate gathering, while others enjoy the buzz of family and friends. Whichever you choose, don’t skip breakfast. Whether it's a hearty brunch with your crew or a romantic meal for two, fuelling up is vital. Use this time to capture candid moments, smiling faces, and that beautiful glow of anticipation. Create a priority list to keep track of what needs to be done, which helps reduce stress.
Morning Preparations: 8 AM to 12.30 PM
Between 8 AM and 12.30 PM, the magic of getting ready unfolds. If you're utilizing hair and makeup services, consider scheduling them in two-hour blocks for a smoother process. If you have more bridesmaids, your hair & make up stylists may need longer than this. I typically arrive between 10.30 & 11am for a 2pm wedding, I will be taking photos of all your details, dress etc & lots of candid photos of you & your wedding party.
Bridal Party Prep: Invite your bridesmaids to join you for a fun morning. Enjoy mimosas while you all get pampered. Sharing laughs and creating memories can set a positive tone for the day.
The Groom’s Corner: Don’t forget the groomsmen! While the groom is in the chair, let them enjoy themselves too. They can practice their speeches or just share some laughter. A relaxed atmosphere helps everyone feel more comfortable.
Pre-Ceremony Photos: 12.30 PM to 1.30 PM
Once you’re ready, it’s time for some beautiful pre-ceremony photos.
Reveal to Bridesmaids or Father of the Bride: I love helping to arrange a magical reveal to either Bridesmaids, or father of the bride, or anyone else you would like a special moment with, once your fully ready & feeling like a Bride. These moments make beautiful photographs, which often end up being some of mine & my bride's favourites.
First Look: If you choose to take inspiration from our American friends, you may opt for a first look, take advantage of this moment to share a private experience before the ceremony. These few minutes can capture raw emotion, allowing you to embrace the reality of your big day, I will be more than happy to photograph this special moment.
Group Shots: If everyone is ready, its lovely to get some bridesmaids photos with the bride, plus a few with parents if they're available . Most importantly, it's lovely to get a few portrait photos of the Bride on her own. This not only saves time but also helps everyone feel more at ease. Plan for at least 20-30 minutes for these shots, ensuring you capture those precious memories without rushing.

The Ceremony: 2PM to 2.30PM
Your ceremony is the heart of the day, setting the tone for what follows. If you've chosen an outdoor venue in Chester, its beauty can be breath-taking.
Duration: Most ceremonies last around 20-30 minutes. To maintain a seamless flow, keep readings and music brief yet meaningful.
Vows & Rings: Have your vows written down and your rings ready well in advance. If emotions run high, don’t hesitate to bring some humour into your vows—it can lighten the moment and ease any nerves.
Post-Ceremony: 2.30 PM to 3:00 PM
After saying "I do," take a moment to enjoy your new status as a married couple.
Exit: Plan a fun ceremonial exit. Consider options like going into a confetti tunnel, it has become more popular to have the bride & grooms step in to a side room, whilst the guests make there way outside, to form a confetti tunnel, ready for you to be greeted by cheers & confetti, this is a perfect photo opportunity, I love helping to get everyone in position & will help you feel relaxed so you know exactly what to do.
Drinks & Canapes: You will probably want a few minutes at least to greet all your guests properly, enjoy a drink & catch your breath as a married couple, so take at least 20 to 30 minutes before moving into group photos.
Group & Couple Photos: 3:00 PM to 3.45 PM
Group Photos: Creating a list beforehand of the family members you want photographed can help organize this process, saving time and avoiding chaos, I usually ask for this to be emailed to me, around a week before the wedding day.
Couple Portraits: This is the chance for you & your new husband or wife, to be alone, away from all your guests to relax & celebrate the fact that all your planning has come together & you are finally married. I will take you for a walk around your venue to all the best spots for photographs, ensuring you look your best, but have a ball at the same time, I will give you gentle guidance so you don't have to worry about posing, I will capture natural, beautiful photographs of you.
Reception: 4:00 PM to 6.30 PM
With everyone in good spirits, it’s time to kick off the evening fun!
Introductions: Begin the reception with grand introductions of the bridal party, followed by your entrance as a newlywed couple.
Wedding Breakfast & Speeches: You can choose to eat first or have the speeches first, this is entirely up to you.
Speeches: Structure of Speeches
Each speech usually follows a general structure:
Father of the Bride: Often starts with a warm welcome, sharing anecdotes about the bride, and expressing his feelings about her marriage.
The Groom: Typically thanks the guests, shares his love for the bride, and may include some light-hearted stories about their relationship.
Best Man: Usually delivers a humorous speech, often including funny stories about the groom and their friendship, while also wishing the couple well.
Maid of Honour: If included, she may share stories about the bride and express her joy for the couple. Typically, the speeches come from the best man and maid of honour right after dinner is served. Light-hearted stories can keep everyone engaged and entertained.
Bride: The Bride can also choose to deliver a speech, this is usually a thank you to all the parents & a few words about her new husband or wife.
The number one rule of speeches is: There are no rules, you can have whoever you want give a speech & it can take any form you want, just enjoy it & I will photograph them.
Dinner: If you're opting for a sit-down meal, it generally takes between 1 to 2 hours. A buffet style may foster a more relaxed atmosphere, allowing guests to choose their favourites
After dinner, everyone usually leaves the reception room & heads to the bar, or to freshen up, ready for the Evening celebrations. This can also be a nice time to get some more informal group photos with friends.
Evening Celebrations: 8 PM Onwards
After welcoming any evening guests, it's time to hit the dance floor and celebrate!
Cutting of The Cake & First Dance: Don’t forget your first dance. Choose a song that holds personal meaning for both of you. This moment can set the mood for the rest of the evening.
Open Dance Floor: After your first dance, invite everyone to join in the fun. A light-hearted dance-off can energize the crowd and create lasting memories.
Evening Food: This can be as light as a donut wall, a sweet table, a cake table, to a pizza van, or burgers & fries.
Wind-Down: 11.30 PM
As the evening winds down, it's time to wrap things up.
Goodbyes: Say your goodbyes & enjoy the last few dances, choose a special final song if you want to end on a high.
